About event

As a result of the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear disaster, over 170 villages and towns of the Polissya region—each with a unique cultural and historical identity—were turned into radioactive waste sites, doomed to gradual extinction.

The Ivan Honchar Museum presents an exhibition dedicated to the documented and preserved heritage of Chornobyl. Here, Chornobyl is portrayed not only as a territory of tragedy but as a cultural space requiring reflection, preservation, and responsibility.

Thanks to the tireless work of scientists from the historical and cultural expeditions of the Ministry of Chornobyl, comprehensive research has covered over 700 authentic Polissyan villages and 97 compact settlements of displaced persons.

The exposition showcases unique monuments of folk culture rescued from oblivion:

  • Traditional household items and artifacts of Polissyan economic life.

  • Authentic folk costumes and reconstructed fragments of traditional home interiors.

  • Works of folk art and products of the region's most widespread crafts and trades.

  • Immersive elements: folk songs, thematic video materials, and documentary films.

This exhibition is part of the events commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, coordinated by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) in cooperation with national institutions and partners.
