About event

On Friday, March 27, 2026, at 1:00 PM, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine will open the exhibition "Ukrainian Pysanka: Origins and Modernity."

Since ancient times, the bird's egg has been considered a symbol of life and fertility—the primary basis of the Universe, signifying rebirth and the awakening of nature after winter. Decorated eggs served as powerful amulets bringing health and prosperity. While the tradition began with various bird eggs (chicken, duck, goose, crane), it later expanded to include "pysankas" made of wood, glass, and faience.

At the exhibition, you can discover a diversity of decorated eggs from the Kyivan Rus era to the present day:

  • Around 200 original exhibits from the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, the Vyshhorod Historical and Cultural Reserve, and the Museum of the History of Kyiv.

  • Rattle-pysankas (11th–12th centuries): Hollow clay eggs made using the ribbon technique, some adorned with polychrome glaze.

  • A unique find: The only egg in Ukraine made of deer antler (11th–12th centuries), discovered in 1996 during excavations in Vyshhorod.

  • Kyiv-Mezhyhirya Faience: A collection from the famous manufactory (founded in 1798), featuring geometric, floral, and Christian motifs.

The heart of the exposition is the traditional PYSANKA. It is a language of symbols and colors that reflects the memory and worldview of generations. For the first time, the exhibition features reconstructed pysankas specific to Kyiv and the Kyiv region, recreated by Merited Master of Folk Art Zoya Stashuk according to historical sources and traditional wax-resist techniques.

  • Dates: Open daily 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (until April 17, 2026).

  • Location: National Museum of the History of Ukraine (Kyiv).

  • Admission: 200 UAH (100 UAH for concessions).

  • Inquiries: (044) 278-48-64 or 093 855 61 16 (Viber/Telegram).
