Vocal duets set the tone for the entire program with works by Mendelssohn, Massenet, and Lysenko. Richard Strauss is represented here by songs from Op. 27 — a cycle he gifted to his wife, a soprano singer, as a wedding present: he wrote "Cäcilie" on the eve of their wedding, and the entire cycle is imbued with that particular intonation of happiness that has not yet become routine. Mahler, Debussy, Ravel, Bartók, Stankovych — each piece adds a new shade, and the overall atmosphere of the evening promises the mood of a watercolor-like event: mostly lyrical, yet occasionally playful in its patterns.
