About event

On September 19, the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema Arts of Ukraine will open the exhibition "Anatol Petrytskyi: Rediscovery," dedicated to the legacy of one of the pivotal figures of the Ukrainian avant-garde and a leading 20th-century theatre designer.

The project brings together rare archival pieces, original designs, and spatial experiments to offer a fresh perspective on the artist's multifaceted oeuvre.

Key highlights of the exhibition:

  • Works unseen for over half a century: Original set and costume sketches from museum funds that have spent decades in storage.

  • Authentic 1920s stage costumes: Two hand-painted theatrical costumes created by Petrytskyi. These are part of a rare surviving trio of museum-preserved stage garments from that revolutionary decade.

  • Archival photography: Rare glass-plate negatives showing how the artist's bold theatrical visions functioned inside actual performance spaces.

  • Total environmental design: Exploring Petrytskyi's approach to theatre, where costumes, sets, and actor movement fused into a single radical visual system.
