Hidden away in the quiet Bekhterevskyi Lane, near the Pokrovsky Monastery, lie the little-known remains of an old Kyiv estate. Deep within the courtyards stands a solitary portico — the only surviving fragment of the late 19th-century manor designed by architect Volodymyr Nikolayev. At various times, Kyiv's governor-generals lived here, and later Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky rented a room in the house. In the early 1980s, the building served as a filming location for the movie Vertical Racing, and in 1986 it was officially added to the list of cultural heritage sites.
The story of how the manor disappeared is shrouded in rumors: no one knows for sure, not even long-time local residents. There were once talks of reinforcing the ruins and turning them into a literary café, but the idea never moved beyond discussion.
Today, it is not only the lone portico that draws attention, but also the mascaron on its wall — a demonic face with a mysterious, almost smiling expression. This whimsical feature has become an informal symbol of the lost manor and its most recognizable detail.
