KIEV ACADEMIC DRAMA AND COMEDY THEATER ON THE LEFT BANK OF THE DNIEPER 25, Brovarskiy prospekt, Kyiv
Power blinds, arrogance dulls judgment, and a grand legacy sows seeds of even greater discord. Can love and devotion ever mend what human madness has wrought?
Clouded by his own ego, King Lear decides to divide Britain among his three daughters. To do so, he holds a contest: the more lavishly each daughter declares her love, the larger the share of the kingdom she will receive.
But this is not a story of hereditary monarchy, not a royal family diary, and certainly not a fairy tale about a blossoming kingdom. It is a story of the cruel reality that replaces sweet illusions. For this parade of flattery and hypocrisy inevitably turns into a catastrophe for the entire nation. An unconscious choice becomes a point of no return for every character in this play by William Shakespeare.
In this modern production, the story acquires new, striking relevance. The masterful translation by Yurii Andrukhovych adds a unique depth and linguistic flavor to the performance.
