At 33b Oles Honchar Street stands one of the most distinctive examples of Kyiv’s Austrian Modern style — the former Makovsky Clinic. Architect I. Ledokhovsky designed this small yet ornate building for doctor P. Kachkovsky. After his death, it was inherited by Ignatiy Makovsky, who turned it into one of the most advanced surgical clinics of the early 20th century.
A stone lion cub at the entrance makes the building instantly recognizable — a symbolic guardian of the house. It was in this clinic that Russian Empire Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin died after the assassination attempt at the Kyiv Opera.
In the 1990s, the building became the headquarters of the People’s Movement of Ukraine, which moved in shortly before the death of its leader, Vyacheslav Chornovil.
Today, the stone lion cub still stands by the entrance — a silent witness to the house’s complex history.
