Is a grim complex of cells hidden beneath modern residential buildings at the intersection of Kudri and Chyhorina Streets. Once part of an 1818 prison integrated into the fortifications of the Pechersk Fortress, it became an almost inescapable underground labyrinth.
For decades its existence was kept secret, and the entrance remained sealed. Only during the construction of a high-rise tower was a bricked-up passage accidentally uncovered, revealing well-preserved cells with bars, hooks, and prisoners’ inscriptions — from the 1920s–1930s to postwar markings left by German POWs.
Today, the prison is part of the “Kyiv Fortress” complex and is open to visitors. The underground atmosphere has remained nearly unchanged for a century, leaving a strong and unsettling impression on anyone who dares to descend inside.
