Traditions live as long as they are remembered, lived, and passed on. Today, as parts of the Zaporizhzhia region are being destroyed by the enemy or remain under temporary occupation, preserving the region's cultural heritage is a vital act of preserving the memory of who we are.
In the midst of war, we daily lose the richness, diversity, and uniqueness of local cultural practices, physical heritage, and the very keepers of historical memory and folklore. The project "Saved Memories: Cultural Heritage of Zaporizhzhia" was born from a mission to comprehensively document the remaining historical and cultural landscapes of the region: to collect oral testimonies from elders, record traditions, folk songs, and daily life, and to preserve objects that stand as material witnesses to community life. The team's expeditions to frontline villages in 2025 were urgent, rescue missions by nature.
This exhibition is a visual representation of the traditions that defined the Zaporizhzhia region. It is a narrative of our people’s journey, embodied through family archival photos, embroidered clothing, chests that held the stories and legacies of generations, and a musical heritage featuring the unique "steppe chant."
We invite you to an exhibition that, despite everything, has preserved the elements of our identity, becoming a sanctuary of memory and a testament to our beauty and resilience. The program includes themed events; details will be provided in upcoming announcements.
