The morning sunbeams and the chirping of birds remind us that spring is just around the corner. Ancestors believed that spring wouldn't arrive without their help. As soon as the snow melted, youth and children would gather on hills so their voices could carry far and wide to call upon the spring. These spring calling songs (vesnianky-zaklychky) were a way to address spring as a living mythological being, capable of "unlocking the summer" and bringing new life.
We invite you to our first spring workshop of the year — a mini-course where we will learn authentic zaklychky from the Polissia, Poltava, and Slobozhanshchyna regions. Together, we will experience the unity of a shared sound that brings us closer to the long-awaited season of awakening and bloom.
The course instructor is Iryna Danyleyko — ethnomusicologist, Head of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Department at the Ivan Honchar Museum, leader of the folklore ensemble "Mykhailove Chudo," co-founder of EGE films studio, and teacher of traditional singing.
Let’s go call the spring together!
