The Green Theatre is an open-air venue located on the scenic slopes of the Dnipro River in central Kyiv, where history, architecture, and urban culture intersect. Officially opened in 1949, the theatre is built upon the remnants of 19th-century military fortifications — specifically, the casemate walls of the Pechersk Fortress. Its lower semicircular retaining wall, constructed in 1856, preserves a two-tiered gallery with musket loopholes, lending the location a distinctive historical character.
After World War II, architect Oleksandr Vlasov proposed transforming the neglected fortification into a cultural space. An amphitheater with 4,000 seats and a park with amusement rides were established here, making the Green Theatre one of Kyiv’s main leisure spots in the postwar era.
Over time, with the opening of newer entertainment centers, the theatre lost its popularity. However, a reconstruction in the 1980s revitalized the space: the walls were reinforced, drainage was improved, granite terraces and balcony seating for 900 were added. In the 2010s, the theatre also hosted a summer nightclub, sparking renewed interest among the youth.
Today, the Green Theatre stands not only as a historical and architectural landmark, but also as a potential cultural venue with a unique atmosphere and a scenic view of the Dnipro River.
