The Church of the Saviour at Berestove is a remarkable architectural monument in Kyiv, located near the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. It is part of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Built in the 11th century during the reign of Prince Volodymyr Monomakh, the church features elements of Byzantine architecture blended with early Rus' design. Over the centuries, it underwent several reconstructions, resulting in a mix of Byzantine, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles visible today.
What makes the church unique is not only its architecture but also the preserved frescoes from the 11th–12th centuries. It is one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in Kyiv. The area around the church is a peaceful green space with views of the Dnipro River, making it especially attractive for tourists and history enthusiasts.
Interesting facts:
The name “Berestove” comes from an old village that once housed a princely residence.
