The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded on November 27, 1918 in Kyiv. Its first president was a prominent scientist with the world name VI Vernadsky.
Status. According to the current legislation, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS of Ukraine, the Academy) is the supreme scientific self-governing organization of Ukraine based on state property. Self-government of the Academy consists in the independent determination of research topics and forms of their organization and conduct, formation of their structure, decision of scientific-organizational, economic, personnel issues, implementation of international scientific relations, election and collegiality of governing bodies. The Academy brings together full members, correspondent members and foreign members, all scientists of its institutions, organizes and carries out basic and applied scientific researches on the most important problems of natural, technical, social and human sciences.
Management. The highest self-governing body of the NAS of Ukraine is the General Meeting, consisting of full members (academicians) and correspondent members. In sessions of the General Meeting (except for issues related to the election of full members, correspondent members and foreign members of the NAS of Ukraine), scientists, delegated by the labor collective of academic institutions of the Academy, with the right of advisory members, and foreign members - with the right to vote scientific institutions of the Academy and representatives of the scientific community.
In the period between sessions of the General Assembly, the Academy's work is managed by the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, which is elected by the General Meeting for a period of 5 years. The Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, whose elections took place in April 2015, includes 32 persons, including the President, five Vice-Presidents, the Chief Scientific Secretary, 14 academicians-secretaries of departments, 11 members. The meetings of the Presidium also include 6 acting members of the Presidium and 13 advisers to the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine with the right to an advisory vote.
