About event

From November 7 to 19, 2024, thesteinstudio (Kyiv, Liuterianska St, 6) will host an exhibition of a photo archive of Ukrainian mosaics by unknown authors, collected by photographer Yevhen Nikiforov between 2013 and 2023. These mosaics were documented in the book "Chips: Ukrainian Naive Mosaics, 1950–90," written by Yevhen Nikiforov in collaboration with historian Polina Baitsim. The book was published by ist publishing.

The exhibition project is realized with the support of Goethe-Institut Ukraine.

Creating the exhibition is akin to creating a mosaic. The project "Chips: Ukrainian Naive Mosaics" reflects a decade-long effort by Yevhen Nikiforov, who, from 2013 to 2023, collected these fragments that form the basis of the exhibition. It explores the interaction between fragmentary and holistic elements, highlighting the importance of each detail.

The exhibition complements the photo book collection, focusing on mosaics that were found by chance but gained new significance thanks to the researcher’s efforts. Otherwise, these works might have remained unnoticed, "at the bottom of the pile".
